Job description

You will be working in the CIRAD/INRAE “Animal, health, land, risks and ecosystems” (ASTRE) joint research unit, whose main objective is to improve animal health through integrated, multi-disciplinary, and cross-sectoral approaches. Your first assignment will be in Montpellier with the “Human and social sciences, ecology and epidemiology” group which comprises about 40 researchers.

Your priority will be to contribute to the analysis and understanding of the epidemiological determinants of animal and zoonotic diseases and to the implementation of integrated, interdisciplinary approaches to manage health risks associated with domesticated and/or wild animals at the human/animal/environment interface.

You will develop, maintain and apply expertise in epidemiology and in the control of infectious diseases and threats arising from endemic and emerging diseases. You will take part in the design and execution of appropriate univariate and multivariate descriptive analyses of vast and complex datasets covering domesticated and wild animal populations.
In particular, you will direct and support activities in the framework of monitoring and modelling projects and will further the objectives of the global health unit in connection with public authorities. You must consider the risk of the emergence and/or spread of diseases from local to global levels and support the development of risk-based monitoring strategies, crisis management methods and emerging disease preparedness plans.
You will be involved in coordinating and conducting digital monitoring projects, mass data management and the set-up and coordination of large-scale projects. For example, numerous projects are being examined in the framework of the COVID-19 crisis and PREZODE international initiative launched by France at the One Planet Summit to strengthen the prevention and monitoring of emerging diseases.
You will also present the results obtained in the form of publications in national and international, peer-reviewed scientific journals and give talks at national and international conferences. You are also expected to communicate study results and conclusions more broadly to donors, decision makers and the media, in collaboration with the CIRAD Communication Department and the unit's management.
It is important that you are also able to carry out scientific monitoring in the field of epidemiology and keep tabs on recent developments.

Desired profiled

You are a veterinarian (DVM) or equivalent with a doctorate (PhD) in epidemiology. Proficiency in the fundamental principles of quantitative epidemiology and risk analysis and understanding of dynamic and spatial modelling methods.
Experience with conducting epidemiological studies, designing studies and performing complex analysis of large datasets (10 years or more) and proven experience with designing, implementing and evaluating animal health monitoring systems.
Experience with global approaches to regional and national animal health in low or moderate income countries with health authorities; Experience with implementing global health concepts (e.g. One Health, EcoHealth).
Experience with projects carried out in the Global South; Development experience with international organisations and or NGOs; international research and development partnerships in connection with SNRAs in the Global South and public agencies.
Project management experience GIS expertise is preferred Understanding/familiarity with applied social sciences in health is preferred Taste for teamwork in an inter-cultural setting.
Fluent English is mandatory.
