Context
Future organization (department / unit)
CIRAD, the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development, works with its partners in southern countries to generate and pass on new knowledge to support agricultural development and innovation.
It has one main objective: to build sustainable farming systems for tropical and Mediterranean regions capable of feeding ten billion human beings by 2050 while preserving the environment.

Job description
If you are keen to get involved in the Cirad's international research and cooperation programmes, join AGAP Institut, a multi-disciplinary mixed research unit, producing knowledge and building varietal improvement strategies for sustainable farming in developing countries.
Varietal improvement faces a number of challenges including adaptation, diversification, and system sustainability among others. Today, selective breeding programmes must be designed and conducted at the interface of the various disciplines, approaches and stakeholders. Modernisation of selective breeding programmes relies on the integration of numerous tools, data and knowledge throughout the varietal improvement process. This change implies an increasing need for computer applications that are able to manage and analyse the data for selective breeding programmes and genetic research.
You will be working closely with the research teams on the bioinformatics platform at the plant genetic improvement and adaptation mixed research unit (Amélioration Génétique et Adaptation des Plantes - AGAP institut), and initially, especially with the “ Dynamics of Diversity, Society and Environments ” team (Dynamiques de la Diversité, Sociétés et Environnements - DDSE). You will be in charge of creating and maintaining Web applications dedicated to monitoring genetic analysis and breeding programmes for geneticists and breeders at the CIRAD and at its partners. More specifically, your missions will focus on:
1. Development of Web applications for accessing different types of data (genealogical, genetic, phenotypic, geographical, etc.) that can be used in varietal creation programmes and for analysing that data. These applications will especially include the interfacing of statistics and display modules with breeding databases (BMS, MusaGris, etc.), tools for managing information related to genomic areas of interest (BMS/Gigwa/Genome Hubs), contribution to development of an NIRS analytical platform;
2. Contribution to the development of the Gigwa genotyping data management application;
3. Contribution to multi-omics integration using Genome Hubs to support decision-making in selective breeding programmes;
4. Maintenance and upgrade of Florilège, Web portal for the RARe national infrastructure, and contribution to the developments to be set up as part of the ARCAD infrastructure.
Evolution
Within the bioinformatics platform, and in the dynamics of the South Green platform, you will become increasingly involved in defining the strategy and technological choices for the development of other scientific applications. You will provide a creative input to projects in liaison with biologists, agronomists and bio-IT specialist colleagues, in partnership with developing countries.
Desired profiled
You should be an IT engineer or have a masters degree in information technology, with additional training in and/or experience in the field of biology.
Skills required:
• Web application development (Java, PHP, Drupal, HTML, CSS, Javascript)
• Database management systems (MySQL, PostGreSQL)
• REST-API design
• Ability to liaise with non-IT specialists to define and meet requirements
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to interact with partners in developing countries and a taste for interculturality
• Keenness and ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
• Fluent verbal and written communication skills in English and French. You will be brought to present your research at national or international conferences
• You should be able to adapt easily, be motivated, be able to take initiative, work proactively and with methodological rigour, to be able to manage priorities and work in an orderly manner
Other skills:
• R, R/Shiny, Python, VBA development
• Notions of NoSQL (MongoDB)
