Job description

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has partnered with Cirad for the CaSSECS project and as a member of the Science Committee.
As part of this project, Cirad will be providing a specialist in evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions from pastoral and agropastoral systems to FAO's Animal Production and Genetics Branch (NSAG), for 2 years, in order to support FAO's contribution to the project.
This is part of Cirad and FAO's joint efforts to improve data quality and provide a clearer picture of the impact that livestock farming has on the environment.
You will work under the direct supervision of the Animal Production Development Officer (NSAG) of FAO's Animal Production and Genetics Branch and of the Science Director of Cirad’s CASSECS projectteam, and in cooperation with the project’s co-ordination team.
Your role will involve:
- Helping to improve national-level carbon footprint mechanisms using local reference data that the project will collect in the Sahel region. Including the use of modelling tools, such as the interactive Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM-i,
- Helping to update the GLEAM-i tool by adding data and information about the local specificities of livestock farming systems (mobility, resource seasonality, etc.) and by making this information available to help update the GLEAM SIG model.
- Helping to improve protocols for evaluating forage and feed needs in pastoral and agropastoral systems, using a tool that integrates the seasonality of forage and feed resource quality and expresses protein and energy requirements of animals.
- Identifying technical improvements for pastoral and agropastoral systems that will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve carbon sequestration, while also estimating their mitigation potential.
- Helping stakeholders to increase their capacity for analysing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Contributing to advocacy work for highlighting the mitigation capacities of (agro)pastoral livestock farming systems, to help align policy and investments in order to promote these livestock farming systems in the CILSS Sahelian countries.
- Helping to raise awareness, among the general public, about how pastoral and agropastoral systems can contribute to climate change solutions, and to improvethe information about these systems used in intergovernmental mechanisms.
- Participating in various meetings of CaSSECS project, with all relevant partners.
- Making field visits (5-10 day trips) to one of the three project countries (Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Niger in order to work with project teams and stakeholders.

Desired profiled

- A higher degree in Agricultural Science or Environmental Science (MSc).
- A PhD in Agricultural Science or Environmental Science would be an advantage.
- A specialist in Agricultural Science, Agricultural System Modelling, estimating greenhouse gas emissions from animal production, the role of carbon and nitrogen cycles in the functioning of Sahelian agro-sylvo-pastoral ecosystems, and/or in agro-ecosystem mapping.

- Experience in (agro)pastoral systems
- Experience in pastoral systems, in the Sahel, would be an advantage.
- Knowledge of feeding practices in livestock farming systems.

- Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams, especially in the fields of Agricultural Science, Animal Husbandry, Ecology, GIS analysis, Social Sciences, and/or ClimateSscience.

- Professional-level command of French and English.

- Experience with the GLEAM-i and EX-ACT (FAO) tools would be an advantage.

- Scientific rigour.
- Ability to work independently.
